Reminder why I put down the wrenches outside dire circumstances: Or how I came home covered in muck from sliding down a storm drain.

I pulled over to the curb at a corner to undo a bolt*. Which proceeded to slip out of my hand and roll two feet into a storm drain directly in front of me. A moment of silence for the outright stupidity of what I had just committed was observed. Finally I got over my incredulity and decided to see if the drain could be removed.

Luckily at this point there were still no curtain clutchers pointing their cell phones at me. So I gave the drain a successful heave. Man did I feel an idiot crawling down to pluck it out of who knows what before it got taken downstream. This prop comedy shit just doesn’t happen in real life for frog snacks.

*Square taper crank held on by friction with a bolt snugged against it in case of failure. Stripped threads prevented normal removal so I resorted to doing a couple hard efforts to break it loose. Which failed. BFH, which was abandoned before I mes sed up the rear suspension, failed. Current assessment is I had green loctite in my hand and did the dumbest possible thing.

New square taper cranks incoming. Of four boxes I shipped last week one is still in transit the others all arrived just fine . I am questioning my decision to not get insurance on the box I sent you. I could easily claim $$$$ in parts on that one.

Reminds me of the lug nut story .

Mr. Anderson’s automobile suddenly developed a flat tire one night, immediately outside the strong iron fence that walled off the local mental institution.

Annoyed but resigned, Anderson jacked up the car and prepared to replace the wheel. He took off the hubcap, unscrewed the bolts, which he placed in the hubcap, which in turn was resting in the road, and placed the spare tire with its hub onto the axle.

He was about to reach for the hubcap with its bolts when a speeding car raced by and, even as Mr. Anderson jumped back for dear life, it ran over the hubcap, sent it spinning for two blocks, and sent the bolts flying in all directions.

There was no possibility of finding the bolts in the dark, and, helplessly, Anderson realized he was standing there with a wheel on the axle, unbolted and useless. While he wondered what to do, a man from the other side of the fence shouted, “Hey, mister.”

Anderson looked up, surprised, and realized that he had attracted the attention of one of the mental inmates, who had been watching the procedures by the light of the street lamps. Anderson said cautiously, “Yes? Is there something you want?”

“I just want to give you some advice. Look — just take off the other hubcaps and remove one bolt from each wheel and use them for that spare tire you have. The other wheels will be held by four bolts apiece and your spare by three. That will hold you till you get to the nearest repair shop, where you can get additional bolts and an additional hubcap.”

“Great,” said Anderson. “You’re perfectly right. Now why didn’t I think of that?” Then, embarrassed, he said, “It’s really amazing that, under the circumstances — uh — you could —”

“Because I’m in here?” said the inmate contemptuously. “That just means I’m crazy. It doesn’t mean I’m stupid.”

Not to imply you are stupid. It just reminds me of losing bolts, screws, tools, etc. whether in the driveway or on the side of the road. I’ve done both.

MT is still low on the impacted scale. I suspect it sat a few days before finally getting scanned in CO because of how badly they’ve been hit. Personal precautions are going to be taken before opening it no matter how many UV lights and chemicals it encounters on the way. That will add at least another day before I open it. I’ll at least let you know what condition it shows up in.

You’re still being coy what I can do to show my appreciation.

My thoughts were closer to a Vaudeville act or silent movie where the action is so exaggerated.

I chose to spend a fun 15 minutes potentially breaking something to avoid 5 minutes skilled labor getting the crankpuller to work.  Ending up crawling through the sewer was too funny not to share.

Rest assured everything came out of one box and was put into another box, nothing was wiped down, disinfected or otherwise cleaned.

N ot worried about what is in the box. The box itself is what’s highly suspect at this point. This is completely removed from you or anything you might have done.

I realize the scope of this might be hard for you to completely appreciate. When testing here finally ramped up we went from 1500 positive cases to what will be around 15K tomorrow. 13500 previously undiagnosed cases in one week with many more sick waiting to be tested.  Hammerhead Fistpunch’s post last night was spot on.

W e have not had a positive case of COVID in my county since April 14. They are still testing 500-800/day in the entire state with I think two positives last weekend in Billings. Now you leave Montana and that is a different story and that is where the box becomes an issue.

Lol, trigger.

I honestly had no idea what that was other than a marginal softcore punk band that I just learned was named after the clown.  The derivative should have been enough warning.

I really couldn’t follow that, but I don’t think I’m any worse off as a result. Avoid the passive voice, though, which was used in your post.
